Puck drop was set for 12:30pm Sunday December 3rd for the finals of the Wingham Regional Silverstick where Saugeen Valley was facing off against Saugeen Shores!
Our coaches readied the boys…the crowd was excited!! The opening ten minutes of the game seen the Steelheads forcing lots of pressure of the Storm and the Storm pushing back with pressure of their own. It was a great back and forth with neither team able to change the scoreboard at the end of the first period.
The second proceeded much like the first with both teams seeing chances. As the minutes ticked off the clock at the 5 minute mark it would be the Storm to notch that first goal. Trailing now the Steelheads had to go to work to get even on the board. It was looking like we would head into the third down by one until Ross Schreinert with 9 seconds left came down the right side and with the shot he’s known for fired the puck top corner past the Storm goalie evening up the game at the end of the period.
The third had both teams searching for the go ahead goal. The goal that could very well seal the fate of the game. It was looking like the game might head into overtime. The teams were pushing with everything they had, with three minutes left in the game Saugeen Shores MacPherson gave his team the go ahead goal. Calling a time out our coach’s brought the team over for some last minute words, with not much time left in the game to regroup we fought our hardest but the clock wound down, Saugeen Shores took the win.
The Steelheads played a great tournament and should be proud of all their efforts over the week! Round of applause to our net-minder Cooper McClement who was the top goalie of the tournament!! Our coaches who are top notch led the boys during games as well as before and after each game!
